Jackfruit Payasam/Kheer

Jackfruit payasam on the occassion of Onam! The aroma of jackfruit makes the fruit simply irresistible. This kheer can be given as a baby's first foods provided you mash the pieces well. Serve it as dessert and have your guests smacking their lips. No garnishing is required- to bite into the jackfruit pieces as you savour the kheer is sheer bliss in itself.
Ingredients-
2 cups deseeded and chopped jackfruit
1 litre whole milk
1tbs grated jaggery
2 tbs coconut milk
3 cardamoms ground
1tbs water

Preparation-

  • Boil milk and cool.
  • Add grated jaggery to the chopped jackfruit in a pan. Add water and cook this mixture. (You can also microwave it on full power for 3 minutes. Stir and microwave on 70% power for a minute.)
  • Take off the fire and when cool enough to handle; mash it.
  • Add the jackfruit mixture to the cooled milk, add coconut milk and ground cardamom.
  • Cook for 2 minutes stirring all the while.
  • Serve hot or chilled. Enjoy anyways!

  3. We have Jackfruit here, but I've never cooked with it. Vaguely remember eating it years ago. So, now I'm inspired to try this recipe.

  4. ooooohhhh..... I love jackfruit. I really miss that. We get lots of that back home. We had a jackfruit free in our garden when I was young which bore awespome jackfruits......so sweet and fragrant fruit. I always look forward to those times when my dad cut open a ripe jackfruit. I found it so fun digging out the fruits one by one and putting them onto a big bowl. Miss those times. Well, I've never tried it cooked. Sounds good.
