Healthy Wholemeal Spiced Veg Pizza- International Pizza Pie Incident

After the huge success of the International Gnocchi party, its time for the International Pizza party. Though I was a first-timer at gnocchi, this time I wasnt willing to risk that since it came to matters of the yeast, and its also our host's Birthday.

A very Happy Birthday to Penny our host through whom the whole concept of virtual International party has evolved!

For the culture-
1tsp active dry yeast
2tsp warm water
1tsp honey/sugar

For Dough
2cups wholemeal flour(atta)
1tsp red chilli powder
1tsp garam masala
1/4tsp asafoetida
1tsp cumin powder
2tsp garlic chilli paste
salt to taste
2tsps oil
1/4 cup flax and sesame seeds

  • Mix all the ingredients for the culture, stir well and leave aside for 10 minutes, till foamy.
  • Stir in all the ingredients for the dough (except oil and seeds) with the culture. Add water as required and knead into a dough. The dough should be soft and springy.
  • Form into a ball, cover with a wet soft cloth and leave aside for 1-2 hours till it doubles.
  • Add the seeds and knead again. Leave aside for another 1-2 hours till it doubles.
  • Knead again, divide the dough into 2 equal parts and roll into a ball.
  • Press flat with the hand using some flour.
  • Grease and dust the pan.
  • Place the pizza circle into the pan and mould into shape, with the hand and the back of a spoon.
  • Press holes into the surface using a fork, to let the steam out.
  • Bake in a pre-heated oven for 10 minutes.
  • Your pizza base is ready for use.

2 large ripe tomatoes
3 cloves of garlic
1/2 onion
salt to taste
ground pepper
  • Blend all the ingredients.
  • Cook in a pan till thick.
I kept the toppings simple, so as to be able to enjoy the spiced base as well.
For toppings-
bell pepper
grated cheese

  • Chop all the veggies fine. I prefer to chop than leave veggie rounds, since kids tend to leave out the veggie circles.
  • Add salt and pepper.
Assembling a pizza-
A pizza is assembled in 5 layers
  • A layer of sauce to keep the pizza moist.
  • A layer of cheese.
  • A layer of toppings
  • Another layer of cheese
  • Seasoning (after the pizza is baked)

  1. Wow Shirley, this is awesome! I thought the party is on tomorrow! I bet your kids will love this so much. Great post!

    Regards, Kristy

  2. A healthy and delicious pizza....mmm. I like it.

  3. Lovely pics, Shirley! This pizza looks healthy and yummy too!

  4. I love how you spiced this pizza dough! I definitely am going to put some garam masala in my next dough. Beautiful job!

  5. what a beautiful post, shirley!a magic veg pizza from you to us,your followers!

  6. I love all the ingredients in your dough - it's a super pizza! So healthy and totally delicious!

  7. I love that this is a healthy, but flavourful pizza. I was thinking of incorporating kalonji / nigella seeds / black onion seeds into my pizza dough, but decided to take it out as the Mr. does not like it all that much. Will have to try your spiced dough out sometime, perhaps with some besan flour as well.

  8. What a pretty base, and I love the addition of seeds through the dough. I'm getting so many wonderful ideas for my regular pizza making with all these posts - I will definitely be adding seeds to my dough next time! Thank you!

  9. Oh wow! This is fab! I love the cuts around the pizza. I must try making a wholemeal dough next time.

    Thanks for joining the party!

  14. That is a really unique dough, and I love the shape of it!

  15. The star of this show has to be that crust - all those spices sound absolutely marvelous! I can imagine the flavor must be spectacular. There would be no guilt whatsoever in having several slices of this kind of pizza!

  16. Oh it looks so good and the crust so pretty

  17. I really love the crust you have there. Plus all the different spices sound so yummy! I'd love to taste this... mmmmm. Time to start planning!

  18. Couple of days ago I tried making pizza with Atta, it didn't come out soft. This looks totally over the top, and love the addition of sesame and flax seeds. Perfect veggie pizza.
